Some people prefer to lose weight with the support and guidance of a structured weight loss program. <nofollow>However, there are</nofollow> many weight loss programs available today and it helps to know a little about each one <noindex>in order</noindex> to decide which weight loss diet program is right for you.

Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is perhaps <noindex><nofollow>the most</nofollow></noindex> famous of all of the low-carbohydrate diets which gained attention in recent years. The main principle <noindex><nofollow>behind the Atkins</nofollow></noindex> diet is that the reason for weight gain is the consumption of starches - such as <noindex>rice and</noindex> potatoes, refined carbohydrates (carbs) - such as breads and pasta, and sugars - such as fruit <noindex><nofollow>juices. Another</nofollow></noindex> primary principle of the Atkins diet is that fats pose no harm to health and that <nofollow>a diet high</nofollow> in protein and fat, yet low in carbohydrates will force the body to burn fat and <nofollow>give you</nofollow> more energy and minimal hunger while trying to lose weight.

The first 2 weeks of the diet <noindex>involves eating</noindex> only pure proteins and fats. The allowed proteins include eggs, poultry, fish and meats. The allowed <noindex><nofollow>fats include</nofollow></noindex> olive oil and butter. Additionally, only a limited quantity of carbohydrates is allowed in the form <nofollow>of vegetables</nofollow> such as broccoli, salads and asparagus. Foods such as breads, potatoes, grains or other starchy foods <nofollow>are not allowed. </nofollow>

Once your desired weight loss goal has been achieved, you are allowed to increase your carbohydrate intake <noindex><nofollow>by 5</nofollow></noindex> grams a day. Because there are no portions of food to measure or weigh - apart <noindex>from making sure</noindex> you don't go over 20 grams of carbohydrates a day, the Atkins diet is a relatively <nofollow>easy diet</nofollow> to follow. However, because so many foods are left out, it is not suggested that the <noindex>Atkins Diet be</noindex> a life-long diet program.

Zone Diet

After the success of the Atkins Diet, came the Zone diet which <nofollow>was made popular</nofollow> by Barry Sears. The central principle behind the Zone Diet is consuming the perfect balance of <noindex><nofollow>foods between fats,</nofollow></noindex> proteins and carbohydrates. On the Zone Diet, 40% of the caloric intake comes from carbohydrates, 30% <nofollow>from protein</nofollow> and another 30% from fats. Although many people view the Zone Diet more balanced than the <nofollow>Atkins Diet, it</nofollow> is more complicated to follow because the quantities of food have to be precise. Additionally, the <nofollow>blocks of food</nofollow> which are allowed throughout the day are between 600-800 calories - which is quite small for <nofollow>many people and</nofollow> may leave some feeling hungry throughout the day.

Jenny Craig Diet

The Jenny Craig diet program was started <noindex><nofollow>by a</nofollow></noindex> woman named Jenny Craig to teach dieters how to change their lifestyles and make sensible choices <noindex>about their eating</noindex> habits. Unlike other diet programs, all foods in moderation are allowed. However, the Jenny Craig diet <noindex>includes an</noindex> emphasis on whole-grain foods, vegetables, fruits, lean meats and low-fat dairy products.

Additionally one of the main <noindex><nofollow>features of</nofollow></noindex> the Jenny Craig program is that dieters receive one-on-one consultations from health care consultants who provide <noindex>them with</noindex> tips on portion control and other weight loss advice. Dieters also receive a menu and pre-packaged <noindex>foods from the</noindex> company. Pre-packaged meals include a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner foods.

Another important aspect of the <nofollow>Jenny Craig</nofollow> diet program is that it promotes an active lifestyle which encourages participants to slowly increase their <nofollow>activity levels</nofollow> through planned and fun physical activities.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers was founded by Jean Nidetch as a support <noindex><nofollow>group for dieters.</nofollow></noindex> Today, Weight Watchers has one of the largest followings in the world. On the Weight Watchers <noindex><nofollow>diet, foods</nofollow></noindex> are given points based on how many grams of fat, calories and fiber they contain. Each <noindex><nofollow>person is given</nofollow></noindex> approximately 18-22 points per day of food points that they can consume. However, the exact number <noindex><nofollow>of food</nofollow></noindex> points is dependent on how much weight a person would like to lose.

Like the Jenny Craig <nofollow>program, no</nofollow> food is restricted on Weight Watchers as long as the dieter doesn't go over the number <nofollow>of food points</nofollow> that are allowed. Another commonality that Weight Watchers shares with Jenny Craig is that there is <noindex>an optional support</noindex> system where dieters can meet and get support from each other and group leaders.

South Beach Diet

The <nofollow>South Beach</nofollow> diet is a diet which was developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston for his heart patients. The <nofollow>main principle behind</nofollow> the South Beach Diet is to teach dieters the right balance between nutrition and weight loss. <noindex><nofollow>It teaches</nofollow></noindex> that there should be a balance between carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the diet. Some of <noindex><nofollow>the proteins that</nofollow></noindex> the diet emphasizes are fish, poultry, lean meats, legumes and nuts. The kinds of fats that <noindex>are encouraged on</noindex> the South Beach diet are Olive Oil and Canola oil.

Though there are lots of fad diet types, majority of the fad diets, share some common characteristics. <noindex><nofollow>For instance,</nofollow></noindex> these diets are heavily promoted on TV and magazines, perhaps with a celebrity voice. Maybe you <noindex><nofollow>have heard of</nofollow></noindex> a couple of them. The basis of the diet appears to oppose information that you have <noindex>heard on</noindex> how to lose excess weight.

* It assures quick or doubtful results, like a weight loss <noindex><nofollow>of few</nofollow></noindex> pounds every week.
* In place of presenting scientific evidence of the diet, you are given dramatic choice of 'before & after'weight loss pictures.
* You can eat only some degree of foods or whole diet is <noindex><nofollow>based only</nofollow></noindex> on one food as catalyst' for the quick weight loss.
* Diet encourages you to make <noindex>use of pills</noindex> as weight loss help or force you to buy costly prepackaged meals.

Common Fad Diet Types
<nofollow>There are lots</nofollow> of fad diet types, offering an exclusive theory about key to flourishing weight loss.

Some common <nofollow>fad diets comprise</nofollow> of:
Controlled carb Diet: These diets maintain drastically dropping the quantity of carbohydrates in the diet <noindex><nofollow>that is</nofollow></noindex> the main key to weight loss. Some examples of this fad diet comprise of Sugar Busters, <nofollow>Zone, and Carbohydrate</nofollow> Addicts Diet.

High carb/low fat Diet: These diets are mainly the opposite of controlled carb plan <nofollow>that claims you</nofollow> will lose weight by lessening fat intake as well as increasing carbohydrates. Some example of this <noindex>diet includes Good</noindex> Carbohydrate Revolution or else Pritikin Principle.

Liquid Fad Diet: These diets make use of unique weight <nofollow>loss shakes</nofollow> as the meal substitute. The most famous example of this diet is a Slim Fast Weight <noindex><nofollow>Loss Plan.

</nofollow></noindex> Consequences of Fad Diets
Though following the fad diet might appear like a very good method <noindex>to lose</noindex> weight, all diet types have important pitfalls. For instance: Fad diets are limiting to be long-term <noindex><nofollow>solution to the</nofollow></noindex> weight loss. When you start again your usual eating habits, you will likely recover those surplus <noindex><nofollow>pounds. Fads</nofollow></noindex> diets are extremely low in calories and will make you feel weary, dizzy, and bad-tempered particularly <noindex>if you are</noindex> not getting sufficient protein & carbohydrates.

Few people think that experimenting with the fad diets puts <noindex>person at</noindex> danger of developing eating disorder like anorexia or else bulimia.

Since majority of the fad diets <noindex><nofollow>are not</nofollow></noindex> very nutritionally balanced, and this approach to the weight loss can be extremely dangerous for the <noindex>young children. In</noindex> actual fact, there have been some cases where parents are charged for forcing their kids to <noindex>follow severe</noindex> diets.

The cabbage soup diet is a 7 day meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss. It is said to have originated Sacred Hearts Hospital to stimulate weight loss for surgery patients.

How the Cabbage Soup Diet Works

The cabbage soup diet is based on a fat-burning soup that contains negligible calories. The more soup you eat the more weight you should lose. The cabbage soup diet is a radical weight loss diet designed around heavy consumption of a low-calorie cabbage soup over the time of seven days. It is generally considered a fad diet, in that it is designed for short-term weight loss.

The typical claimed intent of the diet is to lose 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of weight in a week, though nutritional experts point out that it is impossible to lose that much fat within a week.

Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

* Day 1 - Cabbage soup plus as much fruit as you like, excluding bananas.

* Day 2 - Cabbage soup plus vegetables including 1 jacket potato with a little butter.

* Day 3 - Cabbage soup plus fruit and vegetables excluding potatoes and bananas.

* Day 4 - Cabbage soup plus up to eight bananas and as much skimmed milk as you like.

* Day 5 - Cabbage soup plus up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes.

* Day 6 - Cabbage soup plus as much beef and vegetables (excluding potatoes) as you like.

* Day 7 - Cabbage soup plus brown rice, vegetables (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice.

What Food is Allowed on the Cabbage Soup Diet

Dieters are allowed only water and cabbage soup they want, plus a very restricted set of other foods. The 7-day cabbage soup diet plan insists on sticking to the small list of allowed foods on alternate days, along with two daily bowls of fat-free cabbage soup. Other specific foods that can be eaten including fruit, vegetables, skim milk, and meat. Dieters are also advised to drink plenty of water.

What Food is Not Allowed on the Cabbage Soup Diet

You are allowed to eat all you want of brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices, and vegetables as specified in the diet. Be sure to eat your soup at least once everyday. No bread, alcohol, or carbonated beverages, not even diet soda. Beverages are limited to water, and unsweetened fruit juice on days when fruit is allowed.

Effectiveness of the Cabbage Soup Diet

Weight loss will probably occur due to the low calorie intake. It allows people to eat as much cabbage soup as they want each day, which should sound appealing to dieters. After all, dieters love to hear that they can eat unlimited amounts of food and still lose weight fast. It is not a long-term weight loss solution, but is known to be effective over the short term.
Known Benefits of the Cabbage Soup Diet

On some original documents mentioning the diet, it was claimed the diet is designed for obese heart-surgery patients, so they could lose weight quickly and therefore be at lower risk of complications during surgery. However, these claims remain unverified. Because no one has ever officially claimed to be the creator of the diet, there really isn’t any reputable organization that represents it.

Additional Suggested Health Benefits of the Cabbage Soup Diet

* Fast weight loss.

* The change from some of our normally junky eating habits can be beneficial.

* Vegetables from the Brassica family (such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) have been found to aid in preventing cancer.

Potential Risks of the Cabbage Soup Diet

* This diet plan is not recommended for children and adolescents.

* Since the cabbage soup diet only last for seven days, this diet plan shouldn't cause people in good health any long-term problems, but people who have special dietary needs, including diabetics, should definitely consult a doctor before starting the cabbage soup diet.

* After one week, dieters must stop for at least two weeks before attempting the diet once more.

* Do not do this diet more than four times a year or more than once every three months. It is not a long-term solution to weight loss.

* Due to the lack of energy that the cabbage soup diet will give you, your energy stores in both your muscles and liver will be greatly reduced, resulting in a lower body fluid content, which results in you headache and feeling tired throughout the day.

* You may get too much sodium from the combination of soup mix, bouillon and juice.

* It has also been noted that flatulence (the presence of a mixture of gases in the digestive system) is a common side effect of the diet.

* Dieters often report feeling nauseous whenever they smell the soup toward the end of the 7-day diet plan.

What the Experts Say About the Cabbage Soup Diet

Many individuals and medical professionals are critical of the diet. It is claimed that most of the weight lost is water and not fat, and therefore not permanent. In addition, the recipe for the soup as often given has an extremely high sodium content, usually to make it palatable, and the diet provides practically zero protein for several days at a time. Many people report feeling weak and light-headed during the course of the diet.

The blandness of the soup means that few manage the entire seven days, and often report feeling nauseous whenever they smell the soup toward the end of the week-long diet. However some diets such as the negative calorie diet basically look at the nutritional properties of the cabbage soup diet, and make it more interesting by combining other foods that have the same effect.

Bottom Line

Losing weight and slimming your body is one of your main goals for this year. You have <noindex><nofollow>promised yourself</nofollow></noindex> that you will finally lose your extra pounds off. You want to try some low calorie <noindex>diet or the</noindex> newest crash diet in town. Are you ready? Most importantly, would it really help you in <nofollow>your slimming</nofollow> goal and lose your extra weight off?

Let's start with the 3 day tuna crash diet. <noindex>Maybe you</noindex> have heard of the 3 day tuna diet and how it can make you lose 10 <noindex>pounds to</noindex> 15 pounds quickly. You can be that desperate to lose your weight off, but before jumping <noindex><nofollow>into the 3</nofollow></noindex> day tuna diet, there are some important things you should really know about.

The three day <noindex><nofollow>tuna diet is</nofollow></noindex> one of today's favorite crash diets. Many people assume that there is no health risk with <noindex>short diets just</noindex> like the 3 day tuna diet. However, low calorie diets usually have adverse effects on your <noindex>body's metabolism.</noindex> By using this kind of diet you may later gain weight, and probably put back more <noindex>weight than</noindex> you actually lost.

This is not a healthy diet since it starves your body. You only <noindex><nofollow>get about</nofollow></noindex> 978 calories per day. Low calorie diets will put you in starvation mode during the first <noindex>day. You will</noindex> know it after beginning the three day tuna diet. You will feel sluggish, feel cold no <noindex><nofollow>matter how</nofollow></noindex> many blankets you have, and even some people dream of food dancing right in front of <nofollow>them when they</nofollow> wake up. These symptoms are indications that your body is in a starvation mode.

The 3 <noindex>day tuna diet</noindex> is nearly close to a very low calorie diet or VLCD for short. The three days <noindex><nofollow>duration is</nofollow></noindex> just an illusion. You will truthfully be on and off this diet for one month.

The <noindex><nofollow>three day tuna</nofollow></noindex> diet involves eating foods that are not balanced and will not help you lose weight permanently. <nofollow>This diet only</nofollow> allows you some small amounts of fish and chicken, some peanut butter, a few vegetables and <nofollow>an apple</nofollow> for dinner. If you follow all that, then you can get ice cream too, which is <nofollow>not really</nofollow> a healthy diet.

A large portion of the three day tuna diet are made up of <noindex>refined carbohydrates</noindex> which have very little nutritional value or none at all. When you eat very low calorie <noindex><nofollow>foods that has</nofollow></noindex> some bread and sugars in them, then your food cravings are essentially increased because there is <noindex>more production</noindex> of insulin when we eat these carbohydrates.

Low calorie diets like the 3 day tuna diet <nofollow>will only give</nofollow> you food cravings. After the three day diet, you are most likely to end up eating <noindex><nofollow>unhealthy foods during</nofollow></noindex> the rest of the week, since you are free to eat anything you want. Studies made <noindex><nofollow>in the 1970s</nofollow></noindex> have shown that on average, the 3 day tuna dieter will eventually gain up to eight <noindex><nofollow>pounds a</nofollow></noindex> few weeks after finishing the diet. The 3 day tuna diet may help you lose some <noindex>pounds at the</noindex> start but in the end you will most likely gain back the weight you lost or <nofollow>may gain</nofollow> back even more.

So what is the best weight loss diet to do? You may be surprised that the best weight loss from dieting involves eating, not starving! Hopefully my diet comparisons and suggestions will help assist you in dropping more pounds. In this article I will explain which weight loss diet is best and the 1 major flaw that virtually every popular diet has.

So what type of weight loss diet is best?

 First let's take a brief look at some of the most popular;

South Beach Diet: Low GI diet, meaning you are removing or avoiding carbs for the most part. Eliminating many foods which would cause weight gain including those high in sugar as well as carbs. The focus of the diet is that you are to remain on a loosened version of it... for the rest of your life, or essentially the weight will return. A great diet if maintained for good.

Atkins Diet: The Focus of this diet is carbohydrate avoidance. You can still eat many other types of foods that are high in protein and fat, however all carbs are minimized or eliminated all together. An excellent diet, although don't expect to keep the results unless you stick with the diet to some degree.

Acai Diet: Completely Flawed, acai has no evidence of fat burning properties although it can benefit overall health. The fiber shake you are to take helps with weight loss but it is by no means diet in of itself.

Calorie Shifting Diet: Eat a wide variety of foods, few limitations and encourages eating to see results. This diet has a normal calorie intake relative to what you would normally eat. Unlike all the other diets this one does not try to pile up results quickly only to have you lose them once you stop. It's the total opposite. The goal of this diet is to focus on boosting your metabolism which is the real reason why you put on weight. So once you decide to stop the diet you actually continue to lose weight instead of having a rebound effect which every other diet has because of a lack of focus on the metabolism itself.

<b>Lose <u>15 Pounds</u></b> in <b>Two Weeks</b> by using <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);" href="http://www.fatloss4idiotsdietplan.com">Calorie Shifting</a> Click http://www.fatloss4idiotsdietplan.com to find out HOW!

Before I get into the importance of free diet programs, I want to address an issue that needs to be corrected. "Diet's don't work, Weight Watchers does." This is a line from a commercial I just saw on TV, obviously for Weight Watchers. I have no problem with Weight Watchers but I do have a problem with this statement. Diets do work and it's important that all are aware of it. A majority of the population today has a desire to lose weight but most of them have no idea how to attack their problem. I'm here to say that dieting is the best way to lose weight and no matter the bad reputation it receives, it's still the most effective way to achieve any of your weight loss goals. That's why every dieting prospect needs to obtain free online diet plans.

In today's society, looks mean everything. Looks predetermines how you are viewed as a person. And because of that, people have become more and more obsessed with the next fad diet or pill in hopes to cut those unwanted pounds to improve their appearance. Everybody wants to be thin and they are desperate enough to try anything to get their quickly. And the best way to get there is by obtain free online diets.

Now, I'm not saying these fad diets don't work. Most of them work fine as long as you follow their instructions strictly. In fact, most of them help people obtain their goals quicker. So why am I even talking about old fashion dieting? Why am I so insistent in you obtaining free diet programs? There are three important benefits that separate regular dieting from those fad diets.

1) Regular diets are much healthier than alternatives. Almost every fad diet and pills utilize riskier means to obtain faster results. First of all, the body isn't meant to change quickly. Losing 10 pounds in a week isn't healthy. Steady and slow is the best way to go. Regular diets uses safer means to lose weight as well as it keeps the weight off. Second, pills are never good for the body, even if they are all natural. They might get you results, but you will be sacrificing your health.

2) Regular diets work as they fix the problem that has caused your weight gain. There is always a reason why people gain weight. It could be dietary changes, increased stress or decreased activity. For most it's a bad diet that has caused their weight gain. If you fix the problem, it's much easier to keep the weight off. Fad diets, pills, and most other programs don't fix the problem. Instead, they just delay you problems.

3) Regular diets are much cheaper. There are many options out there that claim to help you lose weight safely and most are correct. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri-System are all safe and effective means to lose weight. However, they are expensive. You get charged for consultation fees every week and then get charged for the food you have to buy from them. Over a whole month, you can be spending well over $500. And for most of these programs, they don't fix the problems that caused your weight gain. Therefore keeping the weight off will still be difficult. Finding your own free online diet plans will be free and be just as successful.

Now there are probably some out there who have said that they've tried regular diets and found it a waste of time. My answer is that most of you have performed those diets incorrectly. Just like with any fad diets, there is a strict regime in which you need to follow otherwise you can't be successful in losing weight. So give regular dieting another chance and this time, follow free diet programs.

I know that sometimes it can be hard to find free online diet plans that provide good results but it shouldn't deter you. So if you are ready to lose those pounds that have been sitting on your body for years, continue on to my site. There you can find free online diets that provide readers with a step by step process to achieve your goals. Visit free diet programs.

Hey buddy! So you want to lose weight, eh? Its summertime and you want to look all nice and hot for those babes at the beach. Ok, here’s what you have to do if you want this to happen quickly; eat lots of cabbage and drink a gallon of prune juice twice daily at noon . . . no wait. Hmm, try this; eat nothing but ice cream and lard for the next three weeks or until the next full moon . . .no that’s not it either. Aha! Here we go: eat six hotdogs per day (with syrup), while cutting out all meat products and carbs . . . . . what? Why are you giving me that look?? Ok, so maybe that wasn’t quite your cup of tea . . . Did I mention tea? Try this magic herbal-essence tea, with the special fat melting ingredient, Babaganoosh. Of course to ensure its potency, the only additional foods you can eat is two loaves of rye bread with pickles and mayonnaise . . . STOP THE MADNESS ALREADY!!!

You know, one thing that I fail to grasp is why people only worry about looking good during the summer? Sure, looking good in a swimsuit or bikini is nice, but is it not also important to look fit when wearing slacks? And as far-fetched as some of these “diets” may sound, the things people are actually trying nowadays are just as perplexing. The problem is 99% of the weight lost on these diets will be water weight, which the body will quickly regain. What’s worse is that all of these diets promote starvation, which in turn causes the metabolism to slow down. Once you come off a particular diet, you are apt to gain back all the weight you lost and then some! The human body does not take kindly to severe deprivation, and it will do whatever it takes to store energy i.e. slowing down the metabolism.

To get a better idea of what kind of madness people are willing to subject themselves to, let’s take a closer look at some of these diets and their claims to fame.

The 3-Day Hotdog and Egg Diet

Synopsis: Here’s one if you just can’t seem to get enough hot dogs and eggs! It’s easy to remember, and easy to shop for! Day 1) seven hot dogs, no bun, and mustard only. Day 2) eggs any style. Day 3) eggs any style. The Claim: Lose between 8 and 10 pounds in three days. Hey, that’s a lot of weight to be losing in three days, where do I sign up?? Ok, reality check people! For starters, there is nothing denoting the amount of eggs you should be eating, nor does it specify adding stuff like ham and cheese to your eggs, etc. Not only that, but just the thought of eating seven hotdogs in one-day makes most people want to gag. Heck, a hot dog vendor in Brooklyn who owns stock in egg manufacturing would find this diet hard to swallow!

The Cabbage Soup Diet

Synopsis: Every day you can have as much cabbage soup as you desire. In addition to this, you are allotted the following foods on certain days.

Day 1) any fruit, except bananas. Day 2) vegetables plus baked potato for dinner. Day 3) up to eight bananas plus fat free milk. Day 4) brown rice, fruit juice and vegetables. The Claim: Lose up to 10 pounds in seven days. The trouble with this diet is that it seriously lacks in providing for vitamins and minerals. Plus the sheer volume of cabbage would turn a bunny rabbit into a carnivore within a week! Not to mention the irregular bowel movements, as well as a constant case of cabbage-fueled gas. Very potent! Sleep alone, FYI.

The Bread and Butter Diet

Synopsis: This diet seems to focus on the joys of getting bread and butter with every meal. Like most of the other diets listed, this one also claims that you can lose 10 pounds in a week. Here is a sample from their menu:

Breakfast:
1 slice cracked wheat bread
1 teaspoon butter or margarine

Lunch:
1 ounce Muenster cheese
1/2 cup stewed tomatoes
1 cup steamed summer squash
1 slice Italian Bread
1 Teaspoon butter or margarine

Dinner:
4 ounces dark meat turkey
1/2 cup corn
green salad
1 slice pumpernickel
1 teaspoon butter or margarine

As much as I like bread, it is not enough of an incentive for me to starve myself. On average, when following this diet you only get approximately 850 calories per day. Sure, you’ll lose weight, probably even the 10 pounds promised. However, by following a starvation diet of this nature, one will lose more muscle weight than fat. Once the average person drops bellow 1,000 calories consumed per day, the metabolism shuts down, and the muscles will start to atrophy because the body is burning the muscle tissue for energy. In other words, your body starts consuming itself!

Two-Day Liquid Diet

Synopsis: Buy a bottle of magic diet concentrate, mix with water and consume for two days. Did I mention you are not allowed to consume anything else besides water with this? But hey, it claims that you can lose up to 10 pounds in two days! These also claim to detoxify and energize you!

1. Everyone is on a diet. Healthy dieters choose a diet that will bring them closer to their life goals.

Diet is a not dirty word. You are on a diet every day, and making it a healthy diet is not as challenging as you may think. It is not about starvation. It is not about being deprived. It is about being able to breathe in your jeans. Even more than that, it is about living your best life. It is about having integrity in your actions.

2. Healthy dieters intentionally plan their diets.

Without intention and planning, most people will eat what they’ve always eaten; whatever is convenient; whatever is marketed to them—just like the rest of society. Unless you want to look like the rest of society looks and want the body you currently have (or the one you’ll have after the next five pounds, or the next . . .), then you can’t continue to eat like the rest of society eats, and you certainly can’t continue to eat what you’ve always eaten. Instead, you must deliberately plan and pursue a healthy diet.

3. Healthy dieters don’t make excuses.

There is no one-size-fits-all diet. There are untold ways to cut calories, get more exercise, and improve the healthfulness of our diet. It is important not to argue for what you can’t do, but instead search for what you are willing to do to achieve a healthy diet that fits your life and goals.

4. Healthy dieters don’t whine about the effort it takes to eat a healthful diet and are willing to spend time planning and preparing.

Dieting is hard. Dieting is easy. Either of these could be true, depending on your attitude. The truth of the matter is, dieting just is. Ever since Eve plucked the apple from the tree, the cavewoman rubbed sticks together to roast the bear, grandma strung a string bean, the Irish boiled the potato, or the Koreans pickled a cabbage, we’ve had to put effort into having a healthy diet. Modern, successful hipsters that you are—you do not escape this reality just because you can order Chinese takeout.

5. Healthy dieters base their diets around a weekly planning routine.

Diets are not a one-time decision. Just as soon as you get comfortable in your routine, you’ll remodel your kitchen, go on vacation, sprain an ankle, hit hormone hell, or simply get bored. Part of having a healthy diet means having the flexibility to roll with life’s changes.

6. Healthy dieters embrace dieting from the top down, expressing curiosity about the whys and wherefores of eating habits.

As babies, the first comfort you received was at the breast or bottle. You are hardwired to eat for comfort. You also eat to socialize, to procrastinate, and out of pure habit. There are a myriad of reasons for eating that go far beyond nutrition. Sorting those out, exploring alternatives, and finding ways to enjoy a healthy diet for any of these reasons—without sabotaging your health and well-being—is an interesting process.

7. Healthy dieters combine the top-down approach with the bottom-up approach to dieting and understand they have to impose some structure to change their deeply ingrained habits and learn new behaviors.

Calories in/calories out, keeping a food diary, making a meal plan, devising a strategy for getting to the gym, or going grocery shopping with a list are just some of the practical, bottom-up approaches that might be used for diet accountability and information gathering, all of which are necessary for healthy dieting.

8. Healthy dieters use the inside-out approach to dieting—using diet as a means for self-inquiry and as a catalyst for personal development and spiritual and emotional growth.

Life lessons are learned through difficulty. No one would choose to have a rocky marriage, credit card debt, or an illness, but savvy men and women learn valuable lessons from the curves life throws them, and that includes the need to diet. Healthy dieting is one of the easier curves through which you get an opportunity to learn life lessons—at least it is something you can control.

9. Healthy dieters spend five minutes each day setting their intentions and planning their diet direction. They commit five more minutes to reviewing their day, noting their accomplishments and opportunities to self-correct.

Demanding perfection will give you an excuse not to “diet” at all. The truth is that you’ll sometimes stray off of your ideal course, but part of healthy dieting is learning to make those detours less drastic and frequent.

I must confess that I have always been a fan of low carb diets that work. My <noindex><nofollow>personal training</nofollow></noindex> clients are constantly coming to me for advice on diets, and frequently I will suggest a <noindex><nofollow>low carb</nofollow></noindex> diet. Unfortunately, some of them don't heed ALL of my directions while on the diet. The <nofollow>result being</nofollow> that they experience frequent plateaus, and inconsistent weight loss. I generally discover that most of them <nofollow>are making this</nofollow> one big mistake!

During the course of just about any diet, there are periods of time when <noindex><nofollow>an individual is</nofollow></noindex> following the plan, and not losing any weight. These frustrating periods of time are commonly referred <nofollow>to as a</nofollow> plateau.

Most plateaus are caused by fluid retention, particularly if the intake of sodium (salt) IS NOT <nofollow>reduced while</nofollow> on the diet. Water is quite frequently retained right beneath the surface of the skin.

On most <nofollow>low carb</nofollow> diets that work, dieters tend to lose a great amount of water weight during the initial <noindex><nofollow>stages of the</nofollow></noindex> diet. Generally, during the first 2 weeks or so. The reason for this fluid loss is <noindex>that carbohydrates</noindex> act as a "dam" for body fluids. When carbohydrates are drastically reduced, the body "dumps" water <nofollow>that had been</nofollow> retained in body tissues.

However, after this initial loss of water weight, dieters notice that their weight <nofollow>loss dramatically</nofollow> decreases. In fact, their weight may increase a bit! This is caused by the body's need <noindex><nofollow>to take</nofollow></noindex> back the water that was lost during the initial stages of the diet.

The mistake that these <noindex><nofollow>dieters generally</nofollow></noindex> make is not drinking enough water when starting the low carb diet. This is also true <noindex><nofollow>of low</nofollow></noindex> carb diets that work. Dieters MUST drink at least 8, full glasses of water daily, to <noindex><nofollow>curtail fluid</nofollow></noindex> retention.

It is interesting that consuming more water PREVENTS water being held. This occurs because the kidneys <noindex>are working "overtime",</noindex> constantly releasing water.

The Atkins Diet, introduced by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1970’s has spurred a legion of low-carb <nofollow>dieters in the</nofollow> United States. For two decades, millions of Americans have restricted their intake of carbohydrates following the <nofollow>teachings of Dr.</nofollow> Atkins. The diet, which was reintroduced in the book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, focuses on <nofollow>the restriction of</nofollow> carbohydrates to 20 grams in an individual’s diet at the start of the program and then <noindex><nofollow>tailoring his diet</nofollow></noindex> to accommodate up to 40-50 grams of carbohydrates during the 'maintenance' phase.

During the first phase <nofollow>or the</nofollow> induction phase, dieters are not allowed to have more than 20 grams of carbohydrates and they <noindex><nofollow>also can</nofollow></noindex> not have any alcoholic or caffeinated drinks. They must also refrain from consuming starchy foods, bread <nofollow>or even fruits.</nofollow> There are no imposed restrictions on meats and other sources of protein and yet weight-loss is <noindex>fastest during this</noindex> period. Later on, more carbohydrates will be allowed in the diet but dieters will be asked <noindex>to watch</noindex> their intake of refined grains and sugar. By the time a dieter reaches the Maintenance phase, <noindex>he would already</noindex> have been used to making smart food choices and would already know the amount of carbohydrates <noindex>he can</noindex> consume that will keep him in top shape.

Proponents of the Atkins Diet claim that the <nofollow>program teaches your</nofollow> body to burn calories more efficiently and as a result is said to lessen fatigue, depression, <noindex>and muscle</noindex> pains.
